Welcome to the front page of the wiki for Democratic Engagement Spring 2008! According to Wikipedia, the biggest wiki of them all (which you all use to research papers even though your professors tell you not to) a wiki is "software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily." In that spirit, it is hoped that you will all use this space as a sort of virtual safe space, posting photos, links, questions, reflections, and anything else that you feel belongs here. This page is ours, so go nuts.
How to use this Wiki:
Even for those of you new to wiki editing, the interace of this wiki should pose no problem. The basic interface is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get - pronounced "wizzywig") editor. Once you click edit page at the bottom of any page in this wiki, you'll be brought to the editing screen. Here you have total control over the contents of the page - you can delete anything, write anything, post images, plugins, links...you name it. Since this is a collaborative wiki, just to be polite, you should avoid deleting or changing anything somebody else has written.
It's very simple to use. You can change the color, size, style, and even the font of your text. The default font for this wiki is Verdana, and if you're posting large blocks of text (for critical questions, for example) it'll be easier on the eyes of your co-collaborators if use Verdana. One important thing to keep in mind is that while you are editing a page, nobody else can edit that page. So, please do all your composition of thoughts, ideas, critical responses, etc outside the wiki (any word processing software will do) and then copy-paste into the wiki so that other people aren't locked out for long.
When you are satisfied with the changes you've made, click "Save" at the bottom and voila! Your changes are preserved for the entire web to see. This wiki is public, meaning about three days after you type something Google's servers will index it and make it searchable!
Announcements / Additions:
FINAL REVIEWS: Please choose a time slot that works for you.
SENIORS ONLY--Sunday, May 18th: Let's meet in Faculty Commons in Main Bldg.
3/28 Attention All Bovines--I thought this might be relevant for our class:
Poughkeepsie: Free Documentary on election fraud - "Uncounted" --
Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections (2008, dir David Earnhardt, 81 min.
( http://UncountedTheMovie.com/ ) Saturday Mar. 29th 7 pm Friends Meeting House 249 Hooker Ave. (corner of Whittier Blvd, across from Rite Aid and Krieger School)--
A documentary about irregularities and alleged tampering during the 2004 and 2006 elections in the United States. Some issues addressed by this documentary include the vulnerability of on-line voting systems to hacking by an external source, and the danger of foregoing a paper record of voter intent.
From the organizers:"'Uncounted' is an excellent 80-minute film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt. It examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes without detection. It shows, for example, that in Florida computer programmer Clint Curtis was directed by his boss to create software that would "flip" votes from one candidate to another. In Utah, County Clerk Bruce Funk was locked out of his office for raising questions about security flaws in electronic voting machines. Californian Steve Heller was convicted of a felony after he leaked secret documents detailing illegal activities committed by a major voting machines company."
3/ 28: HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR SPRING BREAK? Remember the first question you always had to answer after summer vacation in elementary school? Well, let's share some of our experiences and photos from spring break. Where did you go and were you "democratically engaged"? Post your thoughts on the Open Journal and do check out the Photo page for some cool pixs of a few people that you know (smile)! SG
3/ 28 REMINDER: PLEASE POST YOUR CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON THE CRIT QUEST PAGE. We should try to catch up our postings so that we have a record of your reflections on the readings. You can upload them to your individual pages and then onto the Crit Quest page. Thanks! Sarita
3/28 DISCUSSION LEADERS FOR APRIL 3: Alli, Leslie, and Maya ~ Can we meet at some point on Monday or Tuesday during my office hours (12:30-2:30)?
**** On the right hand side, you'll notice that each of you has your own page. We set this up so that you can edit the wiki without being blocked if someone else is editing at the same time. You can upload your critical questions, reflections, or whatever on your own page and then copy and paste it to another board or page. ****

I'd like this page to be tagged properly, but I can't find the place to edit the tags.

What does "tagged properly" mean?
